2025 BMW i5 Review: Three Variants Will be Available

Posted on

The 2025 BMW i5 Series has been the hallmark model in the automaker’s lineup, and the all-new, all-electric 2024 i5 M60 xDrive charts the course for the next half-century. The 2024 5 Series represents the eighth generation of the model, which to date has sold more than 10 million units. The long-standing appeal of the 5 Series is that it takes the best of the smaller 3 Series — sport handling and a driver’s car — and the larger 7 Series — big engines and top-level luxury and comfort — and combines them in a luxury sport sedan package that has come to define that segment for five decades.

What’s New in 2025?

For 2025, there are four different 5 Series drive variants available globally, including gasoline, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and all-electric. That first-ever 5 Series EV comes in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations — i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 xDrive, respectively — though just the latter is available in Canada, with the expectation that an all-wheel drive base i5 will arrive here at some point next year.

The new 5 Series is longer (97mm), wider (32mm), taller (36mm) and has an increased wheelbase (20mm) than the outgoing model, and overall, the exterior looks that much more athletic, modern and sophisticated. A new styling touch is an embossed number ‘5’ at the base of the C pillar, which in my opinion looks a little bit too downmarket for a 5 Series. Inside, the new cockpit features less buttons and controls than the seventh gen model, with two digital screens — a 12.3-inch Information display and a 14.9-inch control display — taking on the bulk of the control functions. There’s a new steering wheel design, with a flattened lower section, and in a first for BMW, an all-vegan interior comes standard. The sport seats have also been redesigned.

The 2025 i5 Series introduced Active Lane Change with eye activation to BMW’s Highway Assistant semi-autonomous hands-free driving system. When operating in hands-free mode, BMW says the function suggests lane changes based on the adaptive cruise control setting and traffic conditions; all the driver needs to do to initiate the lane change is look at the appropriate side mirror; the car will then signal and execute the lane change. X5 and X6 SUVs (except M Competition models) will get this system starting with March production; the X7 will follow in April.

2025 BMW i5 Engine

Regardless of power output, all i5 sedans have an 84.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which can replenish at a maximum charging speed of 205 kW. The base rear-wheel-drive i5 eDrive40 has a single electric motor that produces 335 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, which allows this 4,916-pound sedan to accelerate to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The hotter i5 M60, meanwhile, has a dual-motor setup with 593 hp and 586 lb-ft of torque. And despite a 331-pound weight penalty compared to the eDrive40, the i5 M60 is a full 2 seconds quicker to 60 mph, able to do the deed in 3.7 ticks.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The 550e will be, but BMW isn’t saying what its range will be yet. For those still concerned that an electrified future will be boring, BMW does say that the 550e will hit 60 mph from rest in about four seconds flat. Production will start in July; pricing, range and other details will be available closer to that date.
