The electric variant of the completely redesigned 2025 Hyundai Kona will go on sale in Canada this winter as initially planned. Two trim levels are available, and we now know how much customers will pay. The base Kona Electric Preferred starts at $46,399, while the more upscale Kona Electric Ultimate retails from $51,199. This represents significant yet reasonable increases of $1,800 and $1,500, respectively, versus the outgoing generation. In both cases, you need to add $1,925 freight and PDI, but don’t forget about the $5,000 EV rebate from the federal government plus provincial rebates of up to $7,000 where applicable.

If you look up front, you will see that it retains the same charging port integrated into the bumper and the thin LED DRLs. The lower grille does not seem to have been changed, and we think this model will sport a slightly chunkier apron. It might also get some side skirt attachments and probably a new rear bumper.

Moreover, the N Line badging on the front fenders was visible beneath a sticker. And it is this component that gives away its sportier nature. Well, this, and the fact that it appears to ride a bit closer to the ground, suggests that Hyundai’s engineers paid extra care to the chassis setup. As a result, the Kona Electric N Line will likely be a bit stiffer compared to the normal variant, so it should handle corners better.

“The Kona Electric has played a major role for Hyundai in our transition towards an electric future,” says Steve Flamand, executive director of product, corporate, IT and digital strategy at Hyundai Canada. “With this new generation model, we are offering more equipment and technology than ever before while maintaining a very competitive pricing strategy.”

And how can you not be impressed with the transformation inside the vehicle? The 2024 Kona Electric comes standard with a large 12.3-inch touchscreen incorporating a next-generation infotainment system plus wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. Hyundai’s Smartsense safety features are standard, too. With the Ultimate trim, customers will also get a Bose premium audio system, head-up display, wireless smartphone charger and digital key.

2025 Hyundai Kona Engine

Details surrounding the powertrain are inexistent, yet we wouldn’t be surprised if it retains the 201 horsepower (204 ps/150 kW) electric motor of the regular Kona Electric, which generates 188 lb-ft (255 Nm) of torque. Chances are the same 64.8 kWh battery pack will juice it up. This setup enables the standard model to drive 261 miles (420 km) on a full charge. The lesser version has 133 hp (135 ps/99 kW), a 48.6 kWh battery, and a 200-mile (322 km) range.

Although the optional turbo engine on the new 2025 Hyundai Kona was marginally slower at our test track—it reached 60 mph in 7.5 seconds as opposed to 7.3 for the previous generation vehicle—we still think the standard engine will perform noticeably better. The gap must be explained by the switch from the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic of the previous generation to an eight-speed automatic. The larger second-generation car has lost some of its allure for on-road use, but the handling is still quite snappy thanks to the Kona’s greater size.

2025 Hyundai Kona Price & Trims

Pricing starts at $32,675 for the Kona Electric SE, not including the $1,335 destination charge. The mid-range SEL starts at $36,675, and the range-topping Limited can be ordered from $41,045. When the Kona Electric N Line launches, perhaps for the 2025 model year, it should cost more than $45,000. But that’s our two cents and it’ll have to be taken until the Korean automaker launches its sporty variant, perhaps in 2024.
