Model Preview

The Porsche 718 will reportedly go “all-electric” sometime around 2025, according to a report from industry publication Automotive News. While this is not yet official, the information is said to be based on a presentation made by Porsche to its dealers. This would potentially affect both the Boxster convertible and the Cayman coupe.

Although Porsche models like the Panamera already offer an e-Hybrid variant making use of plug-in hybrid technology, the only other fully-electric Porsche EV is the Taycan. If Porsche does end up adding a Boxster and/or Cayman EV, it could offer buyers a major price cut compared to the Taycan’s roughly $84,000 base price.

According to dealers who reportedly saw Porsche’s presentation, the Boxster EV will bear a strong resemblance to the Taycan. However, important Boxster EV specs such as horsepower and range were not reported. For reference, Porsche says the current Taycan is capable of up to 225 miles of driving and up to 402 horsepower.

The prospect of a small, lightweight Porsche EV could be compelling for buyers hoping to go electric. Sadly, it could be quite a wait until a Boxster or 718 EV makes it to the U.S. At the moment, we don’t yet know if the vehicle will arrive as a 2024 or 2025 vehicle. Having said that, a new Macan EV is expected to arrive around 2023.

A Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman EV would likely compete with the Tesla Model 3.
