The 2025 Volvo EX40 may not be Volvo’s entry-level vehicle anymore—that responsibility now belongs to the new EX30 EV—but this is still a likable little runaround for those looking to break into luxury without going broke. Oh, and if you want an electric Volvo SUV but the EX30 seems a little small, Volvo has you covered with the EX40 Recharge , which is set to become the XC40 for 2025. The gas EX40 competes with other small luxury offerings including the BMW X1, Alfa Romeo Tonale, Jaguar E-Pace, and Cadillac XT4.
What’s New 2025?
We don’t anticipate any noteworthy changes for the 2025 model year. Last year’s update made the more powerful B5 AWD powertrain standard, added a couple new colors, and gave buyers the choice of Bright or Dark exterior themes for the Plus and Ultimate trim levels. Volvo introduced the mild hybrid B5 engine, Google-based infotainment software, and a slightly updated front fascia for 2023.
2025 Volvo EX40 Interior
Despite compact dimensions, the EX40 is surprisingly spacious inside. Alongside the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, the EX40 has the most front legroom, ties the Q3 for the most rear legroom, and provides the most space with the seats folded down. Unfortunately for Volvo buyers, the Audi and BMW both offer more space with the rear seats in place.

2025 Volvo EX40 Technology
Regardless of trim level, the 2025 EX40 gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster alongside a 9.0-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen for infotainment. The infotainment system runs an Android-based, Google-integrated operating system, although owners can still use Apple CarPlay if they please. Those who step up to the Ultimate trim for additional driver assists will also benefit from 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio.

2025 Volvo EX40 Engine
Entry-level EX40 models are powered by a single, rear-mounted electric motor with 248 horsepower. Twin Motor models come with two electric motors, one at each axle, giving it full-time all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive powertrain puts out a stout 402 horsepower in normal driving, but an available Performance pack software option boosts output by 34 horsepower, for 436 total. During our test drives, we’ve noted a compliant ride, hushed cabin, and a refined cruising demeanor; aggressive drivers may find the Polestar 2 a better fit. Regenerative braking allows for one-pedal driving, which is a desirable and convenient EV feature that we appreciate.

Volvo EX40 Fuel Efficiency
Aside from the dual-motor, 408-hp electric setup in the EX40 Recharge—which is set to become the XC40 for 2025—Volvo offers just one powertrain option in the EX40. It’s a mild-hybrid 2.0-liter turbo I-4 that works with an eight-speed automatic to send power to all four wheels. Output is rated at 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, which Volvo says is good for 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. The 2024 EX40 returns 24/30 mpg city/highway with its standard AWD system.
