Rivian R2
What To Expect
For years, Rivian has been relying on R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck for all of its sales. The all-electric automaker is set to expand its lineup with a smaller SUV called the R2. Here’s what we know about the upcoming 2026 Rivian R2.
Measuring 186.5 inches in length, the 2026 Rivian R2 is similar in size to current compact SUVs on sale. Despite its small size, the R2 features a lot of the same design elements as Rivian’s other electric vehicles.
The front end of the R2 has a rounded front fascia, vertically oriented daytime running lights, and a horizontal light bar that wraps around the side of the SUV. The R2 has a thick C-pillar that’s finished in the SUV’s body color, while the A-, B-, and D-pillars are black. At the back, the R2 features a horizontal light bar that acts as its taillights and a black rear bumper.
The 2026 Rivian R2 will arrive as a compact SUV with seating for up to five people across two rows of seats. Thanks to elongated windows and a boxy design, the R2’s interior has an airy, spacious look. The R2’s interior design matches Rivian’s other SUVs with a rugged look with a premium touch.
The SUV’s dashboard features a large central screen, a horizontal air vent that spans the full width of the dash, and a chunky top dash. The R2 features something that’s not found on any other Rivian – a second glovebox.
On the tech front, the 2026 Rivian R2 has a 15.6-inch touchscreen and a small digital instrument cluster. The R2 features Rivian’s proprietary infotainment system, which should include Amazon Alexa, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a wireless charging pad.
2026 Rivian R2 Engine & Specs
At the moment, we know that the 2026 Rivian R2 will be available with three different powertrains. The base R2 will feature a single electric motor on the rear wheels. The compact electric SUV will also be available with dual electric motors, as well a tri-motor configuration. Rivian hasn’t provided horsepower figures for the R2 yet, but the tri-motor model is estimated to be able to get to 60 mph in three seconds.
Rivian will offer the 2026 R2 with two battery packs. When configured with the largest battery pack and RWD, the R2 has more than 300 miles of range. The electric SUV will be able to go from 10% to 80% charged when plugged into a DC fast charger.
2026 Rivian R2 Safety
The 2026 Rivian R2 should come with the automaker’s Drive+ suite of advanced safety features. The R2 should come with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, automatic high-beam assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and parking sensors.
The R2 will come with 11 cameras and five radar sensors that will bring advanced self-driving capability.
2026 Rivian R2 Price
Rivian claims that the R2 will start at $45,000. Full pricing on the SUV isn’t available yet and pricing could change as the R2’s arrival date approaches.
Competitors in the all-electric SUV segment include the Tesla Model Y, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV6, and Subaru Solterra.
