2027 Volvo EX40 Preview Redesign Info & Release Date

What To Expect

Despite a recent name change, the Volvo EX40 has been around for a while. The compact electric crossover debuted for the 2021 model year and has received only incremental updates since then. Early reports suggest that the EX40 could receive a redesign for the 2027 model year. Here’s what we know about the redesigned 2027 Volvo EX40 so far.

Volvo is shaking up its naming conventions for the 2027 model year to help differentiate its EVs. The Recharge nameplate that was previously used to denote both PHEVs and EVs is being dropped altogether and is being replaced with the EX prefix. The brand’s entry-level EV, formerly known as the XC40 Recharge, is now called the EX40. Though there hasn’t been an official announcement from VolvoAutomotive News reports that the EX40 is due to be redesigned in 2027.

The current EX40’s exterior styling hasn’t changed much over its life cycle, but most would agree it’s aged rather well. We may see the next-gen model adopt the unique rear lightbar arrangement of the smaller EX30, but we wouldn’t be that surprised if it bears a resemblance to the model currently on sale. We’re also not expecting Volvo to deviate from their minimalist mid-century-adjacent interior aesthetic, but we’ll likely see an upgrade to the 12.3″ infotainment touchscreen found in the current EX40.

The 2025 EX40 is offered with both rear and all-wheel drive, which we expect to continue into the redesign. Current power outputs range between 248 hp for the rear-wheel drive Single Motor and 436 hp for the Twin Motor Performance Pack. The 2025 Single Motor leads the lineup with 293 miles of driving range from a 79-kWh battery, which will likely see an upgrade with the redesign.

2027 Volvo EX40 Price & Release Date

2025 EX40 pricing ranges from $53,795 for the Single Motor Core to $62,045 for the Twin Motor Ultra. We’re expecting a price increase to coincide with the redesign, but we’ll get a better idea of the 2027 EX40’s MSRP closer to its release.

The 2027 Volvo EX40 will compete with the Genesis GV60Tesla Model Y, and the Lexus RZ.

We’re expecting the redesigned EX40 to go on sale in the first half of 2026.
